This was inspired by a list I had to read for my fiction writing workshop. Except, of course, that was a list for fiction writers. This covers all aspects of life, so here we go!
RULES FOR JOURNALISTS
1. Come up with your own story ideas as much as possible. This way maybe you won’t be chosen to cover the police investigation into a body dumped at the local land fill.
2. Be punctual. If you’re late, you might miss something important! In fact, it’s better to be there early. (Exception: if you’re covering a breaking news story and show up late for a date, that’s ok)
3. Always have a spare. From flash drives to SDHC cards to pens to batteries to tires, at some point you will be in need of a spare. After all, shit happens.
4. It’s easier to be single. This way you aren’t constantly breaking dates or having to worry about the boo getting it on with your BFF when you’re away on assignment.
5. If you do date, date someone with a similar (crazy) schedule. Doctors and nurses are great. Other journalists, not necessarily so much unless you like competition and a built in drinking buddy. (But if you find one, latch on until he’s bleeding from the claw marks. After all, you know how they operate.)
6. Keep eye contact. Important during interviews, this might also keep you from getting shot while covering that little skirmish in another part of the globe.
7. Buy everyone a drink. Loose lips talk more, right? It also helps calm your nerves after the editor has yelled at you twice for typing with your laptop in you lap and feet propped on desk. Also, it creates a friendliness and shows some respect. (Thanks, Bob, for this one back from class.)
8. When it comes to clothing, buy timeless pieces that will hold up well. You can’t always run out and buy a new skirt every other month. Our paychecks aren’t built for that.
9. Read and watch everyone else’s news, not just your own. You might get a story idea!
10. Have one friend who will put up with your crap and lives an interesting life. Instant bull shit meter and feature story, rolled into one!
11. Have faith. it will center you. Bring you strength. And remind you that the world isn’t always a bad place.
God bless y’all!
